Internationalization at TRU
"Thompson Rivers University has a rich history of being open and accessible to students from around the world, and of extending the expertise of the university to the international community. Building on the legacy of thirty years of international connections, the university seeks to balance success in the international context by creating expanded international opportunities and experiences for Canadian students, faculty and staff, and by increasing levels of international awareness and understanding within the university community."
—TRU Strategic Plan 2007-2012
“There are any number of compelling reasons for Canadian institutions to pursue international activities. The benefits for our students, our institutions, our local communities and our country are well documented. International engagement opens the door to a wide range of economic, cultural, and scholarly exchange—an interchange that only becomes more vibrant and more necessary in our increasingly interconnected global society. Internationalization, therefore, is a pathway to global citizenship for both our institutions and our students.” —Dr. R.H. Barnesly, Former TRU President and Vice-Chancellor
2006 AUCC Roundtable: Leading Internationalization TRU has established itself as an international university, as reflected in our strategic plan. Our campus has become the educational choice of students from across our region and from across the world. Presently more than 70 cultures come together to learn and teach at TRU each day. Although the integration of international students is one core focus of our international initiatives, the scope of TRU World’s international activities also provides opportunities for students and faculty members to experience other educational environments abroad.
The cultural complexity of our campus provides the opportunity for rich exchanges between students and faculty and staff members. It is natural that with these opportunities, challenges have also presented themselves. TRU World is committed to supporting the TRU community in facing these challenges and celebrating the benefits of welcoming the world to our campus and becoming a
Globally Minded Campus.
