International Student Athletic Scholarship

General Information

The TRU World Student Athletic Scholarship is intended for international students of outstanding sporting ability who demonstrate athletic excellence by qualifying to one of TRU's varsity teams. The aim of the scholarship is to give talented young people from outside Canada the opportunity of combining sports participation with a year of academic study (i.e., September through April) in a Canadian university setting.

Number of Scholarships

One (1) scholarship will be awarded per team/academic year. The maximum of total international scholarships awarded per academic year will be nine (9).

Monetary Value of a Scholarship

The International Athletic Scholarship is equal to the difference of international tuition fees and domestic tuition fees. In other words, international students will pay domestic tuition fees during the academic year they are awarded a scholarship. Based on tuition fees in place for the 2005-2006 academic year, the International Athletic Scholarship therefore represents an approximate value of CDN$8200 for eligible students.

Criteria for Awarding Scholarship

1. Athletic excellence - determined by participating in TRU tryout and qualifying for a TRU varsity team
2. Must be enrolled full-time at TRU - three (3) credit courses or more per semester
3. Must enroll for the entire academic year at TRU - two semesters (Fall & Winter)

How to Apply for a Scholarship

1. Apply for admission, for the fall (i.e., September) semester, to desired TRU program
2. Submit international tuition fees
3. Submit letter indicating for which varsity sport scholarship you would like to apply
4. Submit resume of sport achievements/personal athletic history
5. Submit a letter of recommendation and video (if available)
6. Arrive on campus prior to tryouts-please see the TRU Athletics website for current tryout schedules

Application Deadline for Admission to TRU

Application Deadline for Fall Semester is May 31. Late applications will be considered if space is available.

Scholarship Awards

Letter will be sent to students who are awarded a scholarship. Their student account will be credited with the difference between international and domestic student tuition fees. The difference will be applied to the student's winter (i.e., January) semester of study.

Frequently Asked Questions  

Q. Does the scholarship cover academic year and also spring/summer semester?
A. The athletic scholarship is awarded for an academic year of study from September till April. It does not apply to study in the spring (i.e., May) semester. You may commence your study at TRU in the spring (May) or winter semester (January) but you may only apply for the scholarship for the fall (September) semester.

Q. Can the same student-athlete receive the award in consecutive years?
A. At the beginning of each academic year (September) students will compete for position on a varsity team. If they make the team, given that they meet other criteria, they may be eligible for a scholarship. One of the criteria to obtain the scholarship is to maintain a GPA of 1.5.

A. After you participate in the TRU varsity tryouts, your scholarship eligibility will be determined.

Q. How do I apply for the scholarship?
A. You need to apply for academic study at TRU by applying for selected program and paying international student fees. With your application, please submit your high school or university transcripts, international tuition fees, letter indicating for which varsity sport scholarship you apply, resume of sport achievements/personal athletic history, letter of recommendation and video (if available). Q. If I receive the scholarship, do I still have to pay the General Fees of CDN$255 per semester?
A. Yes, it is still required that you pay the International General Fees of CDN$255 per semester.
